Raigad Fort in a weekend from Mumbai: trek or ropeway, and where to stay
Shivaji Maharaj's capital, 1,700-odd steps or a four-minute ropeway, and a quiet home in the hills to come back to. A simple two-day plan.

Raigad is not just another fort on the list. It was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's capital, the place he was crowned in 1674, and since 2025 it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Maratha Military Landscapes of India". Standing on top, with the Sahyadri ridges falling away on every side, you understand why he chose it.
The good news: you don't need a big trip to see it. Raigad works beautifully as a weekend from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai or Pune, especially if you break the journey with a calm night in the hills.
When to go
- October to February is the sweet spot. Clear skies, cool mornings and green slopes after the monsoon.
- March to May gets hot on the climb. If you go, start at sunrise.
- Monsoon (June to September) is stunning but the steps get slippery and clouds can hide the views. Go only if you're comfortable in the rain.
Trek or ropeway?
The steps: about 1,737 stone steps from the base near Chitta Darwaja. Most people take 2 to 3 hours to reach the top at an easy pace, with breaks. It is steady climbing rather than technical trekking, so a reasonably fit family can do it.
The ropeway: a cable car of roughly 750 metres that takes you up in about four minutes. Perfect for parents, grandparents, small children, or anyone who wants to save their legs for exploring the top. Tickets are sold at the base station. Weekends get busy, so reach early.
Tip: many people take the ropeway up and walk down the steps. You see the trail without the hardest part.
What to see on top
Give yourself at least 3 hours on the fort. It's bigger than it looks.
- Maha Darwaja, the great main gate
- Hirkani Buruj, the bastion over a sheer cliff, named after the brave milkmaid Hirkani
- The market street ruins, a long avenue of old shop plinths
- Jagdishwar Mandir, the temple at the far end
- Shivaji Maharaj's Samadhi, the most moving stop on the fort
- Takmak Tok, a dramatic cliff edge with sweeping views (it's fenced; stay behind the railing)
On the way back, stop at Pachad village below the fort for Rajmata Jijabai's Samadhi.
What to carry
- Good walking shoes with grip, not slippers
- At least 2 litres of water per person, plus a few snacks
- A cap or hat and sunscreen. There's little shade on the steps
- A light jacket in December and January mornings
- Some cash for small stalls, and for the ropeway if UPI is slow
- Please carry your plastic back down. Keep the fort clean
A simple two-day plan
Day 1: drive out and slow down
- Leave Mumbai after breakfast and drive towards Khopoli and Pali.
- Check in to your stay in the afternoon. Sit on the balcony, have chai, and do nothing for a while.
- Optional: a short visit to Pali Ballaleshwar in the evening for darshan.
- Early dinner and early night. Tomorrow starts early.
Day 2: Raigad
- Leave by 6:00 to 6:30 AM. The drive to Raigad is about 2 to 2½ hours from the Khopoli–Pali side, heading towards Mahad.
- Start the climb or the ropeway by 9 AM, before the heat.
- Explore the top till early afternoon and have lunch at the base.
- Drive back to Mumbai in the evening, tired and happy.
Want an extra day? Stay a second night and go home on Monday morning. The roads are emptier and the trip feels like a real break.
